I Corinthians 14:6 NKJV
“But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?”
I Corinthians 14:6 NKJV
Firstly, we have to acknowledge that Paul wrote to the Corinthian church to address some issues.
The Corinthian churches at this time have gone into self-righteousness, doing the right thing for the wrong reasons.
Therefore, Paul is not discrediting any gifts nor put one spiritual gift above the others.
The Corinthians used the gifts to puff themselves up instead of edifying others.
Spiritual gifts are meant to build each other and strengthen each other in the Lord.
With that in mind, Paul taught us how to use the gifts so that all may benefit in the worship service.
This illustration is not to forbid people to pray in tongues but to use it to build in an appropriate way so that all can grow spiritually together.
Praying in tongues is building ourselves in our holy faith. Worship is between man and God so it is appropriate to worship in tongues but when we speak to one another, we speak with understanding.
If we intend to deliver a message in tongues, then it needs to be interpreted for the body to be edified or else that tongues brings no understanding to the congregation.
Paul says that he prays in tongues more than others but when he speaks to bring understanding, he speaks in a language all could understand.
This is not about dividing the gifts but bringing them all together in unity for a powerful reflection of God and His love.
Let us serve the Lord wholeheartedly so that we can be a blessing and bring unity in the body of Christ.
Blessings
